Garfield County
The county was initially designated O County before the Cherokee Outlet opening in 1893, with Enid selected as the seat. A courthouse completed in 1907 burned in 1931. Its 1934 replacement used Art Deco design, and Ruth Augur later painted historical murals through the federal art program. The replacement building connects disaster recovery with public architecture, and the murals add a separate artistic layer. Together they make the courthouse more than an administrative address in the county story.
Begin with Enid's courthouse history, then consider a smaller community such as Waukomis, Lahoma or Garber for another perspective. The county's account connects farming, railway construction and town development, giving each place a role within the wider story. Architectural and mural interests may require different access arrangements at a working courthouse. A second town stop can shift attention from the seat's public building to the surrounding agricultural communities.
