Pottawatomie County

Pottawatomie County was organized as County B in 1891, with Tecumseh as its original county seat. Voters adopted the Pottawatomie name in 1892, and Shawnee became the county seat in 1930. These governmental changes followed a much more complex history of tribal removal, resettlement, and land allotment. The county’s story therefore includes both the development of its towns and the consequences of policies that divided Indigenous lands and opened them to non-Native settlement.

Shawnee and Tecumseh provide two useful community centers, with smaller towns such as McLoud, Asher, and Earlsboro adding further local connections. Their different civic roles make the county’s historical map easier to understand. A visit can explore that relationship without treating one town as merely an extension of another. The wider county also belongs to the Oklahoma City–Shawnee region, but its own municipalities retain separate identities within that broader connection.
